Repeat Pattern Design
My Design Studio
Here's Command Central. It's my temporarily clean desk area that's tucked in the corner of my Eagle Street Storefront.
Drawing, Painting, & Computer Graphics are all useful components of contemporary commercial pattern design.
A large 60 x 72" work table allows me to spread out design and sewing projects allowing me to created make a big mess. More mess pictures to follow!
Surface Pattern Design is an ancient applied art that is still being practiced today.
Art may can be applied directly on materials creating "one of a kind" pieces, or by creating repeat patterns which are printed mechanically on fabric, paper, tiles, etc. This is my specialty.
Repeat pattern utilize layers of colors which can be changed in many ways to create different color combinations.
"Woodland Ferns" pattern design repeats in a Half Drop pattern.
This drawing of a fern plant and the basis for the design.
The drawing was then arranged in an overlapping half drop pattern
Colors #1 + #2
+ Color #3
+ Color #4
+ Color #5
+ Color #6, the original drawing
I love to get really technical about color. In Pattern Design groups of elements are printed together on one screen or print roller. Colors may be identified by Hue, Saturation and Brightness.
HUE is the Color as it falls on a color wheel, measured in 360 degrees.
SATURATION is intensity from gray to pure color.
#20 = a Grayish color.
#90 = a very bright color
BRIGHTNESS is how dark or light
#0 = black
#100 = white
HSB Chart, 48 Hues from 0 - 351, 9 Degrees Apart
The Design "Lichen Wood" has 5 overlapping transparent colors
Hue 0, aka "RED" How we identify the colors
